Home Again....Sort Of....

Well, if you read my sporadic blogging last year, you know that our family had quite the adventure in 2013. We started off the year just like the previous few years, along with the fact that we were expecting Baby #8, who would turn out to be our 2nd son following after 6 sisters in a row. He is a real joy to our family.

In March, Josue went to Guadalajara, Mexico, to help preach in a Bible conference. He came home with the strong feeling that the Lord was calling us to Guadalajara to minister alongside the pastor down there. We prayed about it, sought counsel from wise, Bible-preaching pastors, and asked many, many people to pray for us. Convinced that this was the Lord's will for us, we prepared for the move and in July, we took off on the huge task of moving this family of 10 over 1000 miles from our home. The trip down there proved to be filled with trials, but we persevered and with the Lord's help we made it to Guadalajara in 5 days. (You can read about our rough start on my husband's blog.)

We arrived in Guadalajara on July 11, 2013. It was a big change for our family. We not only moved to a different country, but we moved to a huge city after having been in small towns or rural areas our entire marriage. It was quite a learning experience for our entire family.

The kids learned to make their own fun since our "yard" was considerably down-sized from what they were used to. Here you see them creating a "swimming pool" by covering the drain on the patio. :)

We had an unexpected visit from home. My husband's parents were visiting family in Monterrey and decided last minute to drop by Guadalajara for a visit. I say "drop by", but in reality, it was a 12-hour bus ride to get to us and then a 24-hour bus ride for them to get home. But it was wonderful to have them there for the short time they stayed.

We got our school room all set up and ready to go. We continued what we had been doing and added in some Spanish vocabulary building with the little ones. The only downside to our homeschooling is that the girls didn't learn as much Spanish as they would have had they been in a Spanish-language school all day.

We visited a nearby town when Josue was invited to preach in their church service. Here you see us walking to the city center where some evangelism was taking place.

My "mom's helper" taking care of the little ones during a church service in Guadalajara.

This is Raul with his dogs, Princesa and Pirata. He was a homeless man who slept on this sidewalk at the store near our house. The cart you see behind him contains all his earthly possessions. We became friends with him and were able to help him several times. But honestly, I would say that he helped us as much as we helped him, though I'm sure he wouldn't believe that to be true. He was so sad to hear that we were leaving Guadalajara to come back home and we were equally sad to say goodbye. We miss him and pray for him often that the Lord will use the Bible we gave him to bring him to Christ.

Although we went to Guadalajara with the intent of staying long-term, the Lord had other plans for us. We still do not completely understand what He was and is doing in our lives, but we trust Him completely because we know that He is good. Here you see the movers packing up our belongings for the trek home.

Back "home". While we are home, we are not exactly home. Our house has been rented out for 3 years. The other elder in our church, and his wife, very graciously moved out of their beautiful house to give us a place to stay. This is the view from the front door. We are humbled beyond measure at the kindness of the Lord and His people to us. The outpouring of love and support to us upon returning home has been amazing. We are so thankful to be a part of such a loving fellowship of Christians. We love and appreciate each and every one of you.

My New Favorite Drink

Dr. Pepper has always been my favorite beverage. I loved it! Then we moved to Mexico. I can find it here, but it takes a little bit of searching. So I switched to Coke. The Mexican kind. In a glass bottle. Mmmm!

But then......

Someone taught me how to make my own "Agua de Jamaica" (pronounce it "AH-gwa day hu-MY-cuh").

Can you say delicioso????? I could drink this stuff all.day.long. And it is good for you! Just research "hibiscus tea". "Agua de Jamaica" is just that, tea made from dried hibiscus flowers.

Here's how to make it:

First get your dried hibiscus flowers. I usually buy mine in bulk here in Guadalajara. This time I bought it in a package at the supermarket. In the states you can find it online. Check it out at Bulk Herb Store. If you live near any Hispanic grocery stores, you may be able to get it there.

When I have bulk flowers, I use about two handfuls for 2 one-gallon pitchers.

Boil the dried flowers in water for several minutes.

Then strain it into your pitchers, sweeten to taste and add water to fill your pitchers.

Enjoy a nice cold glass of "Agua de Jamaica". Tangy and refreshing!

**I did find a warning about the use of hibiscus tea during pregnancy. Please do your research before drinking this during pregnancy.

Six Flags with Family

Sometimes God grants kindness to His children even in the small things. Things that don't really matter much in the whole scheme of things, but just make us smile. That's how I feel about this trip.

When I found out we were expecting Isaiah I was thrilled, but then realized I would be due really close to the time for Homeschool Day at Six Flags. 😔

I have really, really wanted to take my little girls for the past few years. So when I learned about our move to Mexico I asked my husband to please take the kids this year without me. 😢

He reluctantly agreed (the man strongly dislikes going there). So he bought the tickets and away he went with 6 of our kids plus 3 cousins. I was very sad to watch them go, but I was happy my little girls would have a fun day. (They also met up with some sweet friends who we will miss dearly.)

However, God chose to give me a small blessing in sending rain that day. They got soaking wet and rained out, with Six Flags issuing them rain checks for later on in the season. 😊

So I got to go after all!! And this time my  family came along with us!

The girls loved meeting Bugs and Sylvester.

Miriam on the merry-go-round, on a "safe" horse that doesn't go up and down. 😄

Esther "I'm not afraid of anything" Contreras, on the up-and-down kind!

Even Isaiah and Mom got to ride this one!

Big hats!

Nanna and all the "little people".

On the Superman ride in Looney Tunes Land.

With Porky Pig.

And Pepe le Peu

Truckin' with Nanna.

We had a GREAT day.

And, Mama, J, and K, if you are reading this, I had a blast with y'all that day! I love you all bunches and I am so thankful the Lord gave me this wonderful, fun day with y'all! We'll have to do it again sometime!!!

Corpus Christi

We took our last road trip before "the Big One". We visited Sovereign Grace Community Church in Corpus Christi. It was a good time of fellowship and meeting new Christian brothers and sisters.

It is a long drive from our house to Corpus Christi. We arrived around 9:45 Saturday night. After a refreshing night's sleep we met with the saints for church Sunday morning.

Lunchtime brought more time to fellowship and get to know the brethren. It is amazing how Christians can meet for the first time and feel like they've known one another for years.

In the evening we had a cookout at the beach at South Padre Island. This was the first time my children saw the sea.

They loved it!

Well, except Esther...she thought the waves were chasing her and she ran screaming from them. :)

Miriam decided she would rather not swim when she saw a jellyfish. (She knows all about them from "Finding Nemo".) Smart girl...not counting Mama and Isaiah, she was the only one to escape jellyfish stings.

Hot dog with a side of sand. :)

We figured out why it is not a good idea to feed the seagulls.

Several of the kids pitched in with the help of one mom to build a sand castle city. When it got dark they added glow sticks. :)

Fun, fun time at the beach!
